Totally excited to see the double page article spread in the June/July 2009 issue of Heart & Soul magazine, which recounts my trek to Machu Picchu.
It was a once in a lifetime trip and I felt blessed to have shared the experience with some amazing ladies as well.
Excerpt - We lay sprawled along the rocky narrow trail, utterly exhausted. Daypacks as pillows, sunhats half covering our eyes from the sun, fatigue had completely taken over.
Our legs were failing us, muscles tensed from such unfamiliar, grueling exercise. My chest kept expanding wildly, trying to suck in as much of the thin air as it could.
I’d done everything I was told to do – from drinking coca tea to chewing coca leaves to help with the high altitude.
Even time tested remedies wane as one’s psyche takes over. Forging on was virtually impossible at this point.

Very good article, congrats sis, i’m proud of you ;-p.
Awesome. Good job -
Excellent story, L. Good writing, great photos, AND a publisher. What’s not to love?
(p.s. tab order of fields in comment submittal is wacky)
Congrats, great article! Machu Pichu was a trip of a lifetime for me too!
Thanks guys! More soon
niiiice…
Terrific article! Love it! And you couldn’t have ended it in a better way than with “..my race through life can only be completed at one pace – mine.”
That’s awesome Lola. One of the things i remember from “Dead Women’s Pass” was watching someone trudge up the trail (i think they were from germany) and upon reaching the summit proceeded to light up a cigarette. Now that’s what i call dedication to a habit.
Tope – See you soon!
Erica – Thanks!
Jay – Haha. Only Europeans
Great article, sounds like a fantastic yet grueling adventure! This is a place that many people would love to visit, but not many will have the chance. Well done.
Awesome! I plan on going to Machu Picchu on my upcoming trip to Peru, but I will be taking the train. I would love to challenge myself with one of the trails, but I am planning on reserving the bulk of my trip for Bolivia! Can you tell me how people reacted to you in Peru? Are they used to seeing black women there?

I’m glad the article is in print – you worked really hard on it and it’s a great piece. Could I be one of the “amazing ladies” !? Your description of the trip, the awesomeness and difficulties are spot on.
