Postcard: Girl In White

January 18, 2011

Nigeria - Photography - Lola Akinmade

A young Muslim girl wearing a white hijab with white powder and Yòrubá tribal marks on her face. I wonder about the life behind those eyes.

Photographed in Lagos, Nigeria while doing some photojournalism work with orphans through a local NGO.

    So much intensity there. Are those scars on her face? I really hope not.

    Amazing photo! What do the powder and marks signify?

    @Kristin (C&C) – Thanks!

    @Neha – Thanks! Those are what we Yoruba call “tribal marks” which denotes people are from certain Yoruba tribes or ethnic groups. Though they are also technically “scars”, they are more of an ancient traditional practice. Similar to tribal tattoos and such.

    @Steve – Thanks! The powder is usually put on the face to soothe heat rash. Regarding the tribal marks, I explained them above to Neha.

    Such a fantastic photo. The contrast of white and black throughout the picture makes it really striking.

    moving. What a fantastic photo…what is it you were working on with the NGO? I want to see more pix that came from this experience.

    @Theresa & Kasandra – Thanks!

    @Joshy – Thanks bro. We were registering the orphans within a local community with the local government so they can track them, their progress, watch out for any signs of abuse, and make sure they’re developing, going to school, in addition to also bringing them much-needed supplies.

    They’re the most vulnerable in the society. I’ve got a short writeup and a few photos here – http://photophilanthropy.org/gallery-posts/reaching-the-hard-to-reach/

    Tons of photos from the project but I’m soooo behind on actually redesigning the site and better presenting my photography :(
